The Kraft-Heinz merger will form the 5th largest food company in the world. The two iconic companies will join forces with some of the best known brands such as Heinz ketchup, Weight Watchers, Heinz 57, Ore-Ida, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Oscar Meyer, Kool-Aid, Jell-O, and Planters Nuts. The average consumer’s pantry will be monopolized by this mega company.
It will be an interesting marriage – Pittsburgh’s Heinz Ketchup with Philadelphia Cream Cheese. And will consumers now start to put ketchup on their Kraft Macaroni and Cheese?
Kraft and Heinz, both packages food manufacturers, have both been struggling due to the sluggish demand as consumers’ tastes have shifted to healthier foods.
Although the news may be good for the Heinz company, I don’t see it as good news for Pittsburghers. This reminds me of the 1995 merger with Westinghouse and CBS. It was not a happy ending for Pittsburgh.
